A Grand Room Revealed

This refurbishment transforms a compact ‘piano nobile’ studio apartment in Chelsea into a calming and sophisticated home. Years of alterations had obscured its original period character; our approach was to peel back these layers and restore the essence of a grand front room overlooking the tree-lined square.

Interior room undergoing renovation with scaffolding, construction materials, and damaged ceiling, large windows with open shutters, and a view of green trees outside.

A bespoke joinery unit was introduced as the central organising element of the open plan, performing multiple roles as kitchen, storage, and a screen to the sleeping area. Combined with reinstated period detailing and natural wood flooring, the design strikes a careful balance between historic restoration and contemporary living.

A white mantelpiece with intricate carvings, mounted on a wall with three black-and-white framed photographs of fish above it, two black sculptures, and a small gray sculpture on the mantel.

The result is a small but gracious apartment where proportion, detail, and craftsmanship elevate compact living into something enduring and elegant.
